I am delighted to welcome British Silver Week to Chatsworth. For more than 300 years my ancestors have been commissioning silver, some of which is on view today, and as you will see from the cabinet on the Great Stairs landing, both the Duchess and I continue this tradition. In recent decades British silver has been enjoying a renaissance as is demonstrated by the 20th century examples loaned from the private Pearson Collection, entirely devoted to post-1945 designer silver, on view to the public for the first time. The silver trail at Chatsworth, which shows that modern works of art sit well within an historic environment, leads to the Great Dining Room; here the latest work of a dozen of Britain's finest silversmiths is displayed. Also on view are the remarkable fine-art foundry castings of contemporary sculptures by Lynn Chadwick, Jonathan Kenworthy, Christie Brown and Ralph Brown from Pangolin Editions, showing that superb contemporary craftsmanship is alive and well in Britain today. I congratulate British Silver Week on its initiative, and I hope you will enjoy these fascinating works of art at Chatsworth.
