Dorothy Cross, Finger Crab, Sterling Silver, Edition of 12, 6.5 cm height
Central to Cross's work is the position of the human in nature, often working
with found objects and re-presenting them. Her undergraduate Degree was in
Jewellery followed by a Sculpture Masters. One of her most recent projects
involved designing the stage set for the English National Opera on the production
of 'Riders to the Sea' directed by Fiona Shaw.
Finger Crab is a cast of a small shore crab found on the beach beside her home.
One lost claw is replaced by a cast finger of a child. The fine casting and the
ability of silver to replicate the delicate detail of the original model, along with
the beautiful boiled white finish, has made this experiment a huge success. |

| Much of my work is plain, highly-polished and with stones or shells to add
colour and or for practical reasons. Lately I've been moving towards leaving
part of the stones or shells in their natural state or with natural blemishes
to form a contrast with the polished finish of the silver. For British Silver
Week this year I've decided to concentrate on knives because this was the
first silverware product I sold when I set up my own workshop back in 1976.
The silver bladed knives range from angular styles to more flowing organic
shapes. |
